Cape Town

Cape Town is one of Africa's most developed hubs for tech startups and innovation. Home to only a few corporates, Cape Town sets its focus on local business needs and has become an important city for entrepreneurship. By inviting local founders to become part of out vast expert network, Merck is taking the opportunity to extend its innovative spirit to this African startup hotspot.

Together with our partner Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST) we will be targeting startups across Southern Africa. With a challenge for startups, and the biotech Hackathon that took place in September, we are connecting with the most curious minds of Cape Town.

What do you get?

The selected startups were invited for a Pitch Day in Cape Town and the best startup will have the opportunity to collaborate with Merck globally in our Headquarters.

About the Pitch & Hackathon Event

Our Hackathon in Cape Town was a unique learning and business opportunity for all regional innovators, founders, and tech experts. For a whole day, teams worked on technologically advanced solutions to real life problems encountered by Merck businesses. Under expert guidance from Merck mentors and working side by side with people of different professional backgrounds, they had the opportunity to build their ideas from scratch. Our Cape Town Hackathon not only granted teams access to a vast entrepreneurial network but also served as a cool educational event for creatives and techies.

In addition to the hackathon, there was a Merck Pitch Event in Cape Town in November, enabling startups to showcase their ideas and become part of the Merck Accelerator in Darmstadt, Germany.
